Mr. Baca

Mr. Baca, Los Angeles impacts the whole state of California. That is why I share a few words here. You must feel some pride in having been elected as chief, as you retire today. And, those you led in the department, have a sense of how effective your leadership truly was, and perhaps how it was not.

Hopefully, your department that you pass to a newly elected leader and those who enter it in the future, will be able to conduct themselves with the highest integrity that jails, courts, and corresponding public matters require. Above all, each person should be treated with dignity and empathy, in such civil situations.

apology

I apologize to you, my readers, for having used terminology in the past: “Judeo-Christian”. In fact, I’ve been corrected in my understanding of misnomer – that what I should correctly otherwise state, is “Hebrew-Christian”. Allow me to simply use “Christian” in the future, so as not to create confusion.

Why love is so important

Love shapes all of our lives. Lack of it always leaves its mark etched on our hearts. Speaking for myself, seeking it out has always been of primary importance; without it, one withers like a dead weed as we bleed what little of it exist.

Most of you, my readers, have gone to great lengths to find love with another. It has motivated you, like me, to go to great lengths to win the favor of a beloved. While this effort is not always successful, we should not take it out on others. Taking the freedom of others away, in order to feel some superiority, is what I see happening as we build more prisons in our state of California.

I direct my readers to a folk music artist of several decades ago. She, like me, has some Mexican heritage. She sang some songs entitled: “You’re No Good” and “When Will I Be Loved.”

Whether these songs were autobiographical or not, plays less relevance in this blog post. I witnessed two father figures in my family suffer from Parkinson’s disease. Though I was not of blood relation to either of them, I cared about them and as I say here, I witnessed their disease. My other side of the family is of Mexican, French & Portuguese descent (from what I know). The folk artist whom I referenced, has Mexican ancestry as well. She also suffered/s from Parkinson’s. On these two points, I take notice to her two musical hits. The titles are so appropriate to today. The two thoughts evoked by the titles alone, could be the words of every California state incarcerated individual who is plagued by drug addiction, lack of education, lack of money, violence and crime, and in possibly all cases… a lack of love in return for what little love they had, that they could dole out to others. In a state rife with broken families, single parents, and abortion, I’m sure that Linda Ronstadt may agree with me today, that building more prisons is not the recipe for communal success.

“California ranks 47th out of 50, in economic outlook” – [see  http://www.tpgonlinedaily.com/california-ranks-47th-out-of-50-states-on-economic-outlook/ ]
Is this a degenerate state, motivated by incarcerating more people? Using property owners next, to go even further to fund these operations? For what?! You’d do better to get these people to churches and families, rather than behind bars. Use money on state poverty services instead, and keep the change.

Why does proportion matter?

If you steal a pencil or pen from work, you may be a thief, but you certainly are much less of one compared to the colleague who steals a ream of paper every month. That is why judgment requires discerning. So, if you steal the pencil, that may have been the only one that your employer has for you to use for a period of time, but the colleague who steals all that paper, cost the employer more money than you did.

Proportion matters. What if it did not matter? Let me give an example: You treated all spices the same when you baked a cake, without regard to potency. Let’s say you used the same amount of salt as you did granulated sugar. Can it really make much a difference in flavor? I mean, doesn’t salt look like sugar? And, weigh the same as granulated sugar?

People who might not understand figures, by comparison, to other figures, have to better account and assess situations. This is critical in perception of crimes and in degree of punishment.

$100 may be an inconvenience fee to one person, and it might set back another person for months or even a whole year. It’s about time that we as a society get better at discerning degrees of difference, and how the degree determines outcomes.

accountability

Citizenry that has no debt, should not be paying its government’s debts, nor allowing its government to accrue it.

“There is no question”

“There is no question we need to change the way our state is governed. The first big change must be to live within our means.”

Those were Governor Jerry Brown’s campaign words. Does our new state budget stick to that philosophy? Or, will California state spending that is outlined in the new budget, exceed state revenue?

police brutality given a free pass

I am saddened once again by an incidence of police brutality, where the verdict in court this week exonerated two police officers of excessive force (or charges to that effect); that a US man living in Orange County, died at the hands of – was beaten to death after reportedly being given conflicting simultaneous commands by two Fullerton officers. No one would be able to comply with such commands. Above and beyond that point, this was murder. Rest in peace Kelly Thomas.

Golden Globes 2014

What a fun show to tune in to see. Good awards show. An Austrian wins! Great films were nominated and won. It was a relaxed and fun presentation. There was the opportunity to see faces not seen for a while. Excellent!
