Dennis Rodman

Dennis has courageously defied what I thought were travel bans to North Korea. But, I do see a double standard, as some US women in the recent past, risked life by going there. It takes somebody with his and their talent to even be willing to go there. I know that some of the media (CNN) has questioned his travel there; but hey, I give him credit for being an ambassador that risked being locked up or killed there. How he got in there and out of there in the first place, I don’t know. And I don’t mean that logistically, rather, by way of our State Department. Maybe the US government backed this idea? I think it’s a good idea. I might be wrong. Anyway, I guess he accomplished something! Peace and democracy? And, he played great basketball in his day.

Hollywood

Hollywood should never be the sacrificial altar of its members’ souls. I truly believe that if Hollywood is to remain a viable marketer, the product must remain true to the narrative of its commercial creators. That includes actors, writers, directors, producers and all others involved. It seems all too certain, that Hollywood gained a notorious reputation as being the vampire of creativity, while hording the spoils for profit. True, the market is global, and with such expansive audiences, there is temporarily some room for dispersion to be cast, but at the end of the day, the films that bring in dollars, will be founded on stories that are honest, and stories that are re-created, by people who act with an altruism that does not exploit, with the aim of creating works that people need to see. Yes, need to see. Knowing what people want to see is part of the formula, but the rest of it, is creating depictions that people want to see AND need to see.
[Update 2014: After watching the “Golden Globe Awards” on TV, I was reminded and reassured that the industry is vibrant and still has much to promise in coming years to new generations. I did get out to see some of this years’ great works, and enjoyed them much. Congratulations to the nominees and winners.]

People who are healthy

God bless people so healthy that they don’t need to utilize as many services throughout a year – God bless them for reserving health care time to people who need it more than they do. That’s a gracious act. From the health provider’s perspective on earnings, costs are equal regardless of who you are. Procedures, consultations, and drugs don’t cost more on some people than on others – in theory. Unless, the procedure requires more time due to your BMI for instance. In that way multiple procedures, and longer times required do factor in. And in those cases, costs go up and penalize everyone insured; which is also a reason that healthier people resist entering the pool. But, even healthier people cost money to maintain health, so entering a plan is smart planning. That is, if the system is not rigged against them.

“Affordable Care Act”

American patients want healthcare laws that benefit their health. This service has been promised by the two major US political parties over the course of many years. We are tired of it. It’s been a campaign slogan and an exploit of voters’ needs. Precisely that is why, so many Americans are urging their Congressmen and Congresswomen to prescribe fixes in reply to the multiple doubts they express, regarding the “Affordable Care Act”, which has been detected as a problem. Opponents seeking a constituency win have locked horns in the capital over a significant amount of time. It’s all come to a head. This is my criticism: Using healthcare as a way to increase government power over citizens, is not welcomed, and that is what we people are sensing now, happening to us. But, the question after the government shutdown this fall remains: Why has the most important law not been voted on, up or down, as a singular independent law? That law [regarding “pre-existing conditions”] does not have to be bundled in with “Obama-Care”, and has nothing to do with attempting to gain the establishing of all sorts of powerful healthcare bureaucrats. That singular law that should be voted would enforce the right for all patients not to be turned down by an insurance company for having a pre-existing condition. That was talked about on its own, already over 7 years ago. As we know, for years, people have not been able to get insurance for that reason – putting great financial strain on patients who do have insurance, to subsidize the massive numbers of health care employees and service providers in our country. This also puts a strain on people without insurance, who risk the out-of-proportion medical bill that health providers might be banking on to compensate for supposed lost revenue, as compared to somebody who has more frequent health services per year. The solution is “called” editing and revising “Obama-Care” to ensure that healthcare does not remain a racket. The lawmakers already know what’s good and bad about the “Affordable Care Act” which is quite aptly named – is it actually affordable though? Perhaps, it is for the government itself. And constituents know it must be revised. If any part of “Obama-Care” fails to enforce fairness and accurate billing – as just one example, then it’s a flawed bundle. If fairness is not even so much as a priority, then we surely ought to be even more insistent on revision and even de-funding. If “Obama-Care” includes regulating insurance billing, as opposed to bloating and protecting robbery and racketeering, then that is a plus for “Obama-Care” and its drafters. And, in that case it should garner bi-partisan support. The deadlock, confirms that there is cause for mistrust however… “Where there’s smoke there’s fire”. If they can clean up fraud and waste however with the law, they could even then better fund what we in California know as “Medi-Cal”. Interesting as well, is that different states have different laws. So is “your” state “black” or “red” on the roulette table?
Everyone in America who wants health insurance, who also has a “pre-existing” condition, is being slighted in a very big way right now by increased fees (for some more than others) and the “pre-existing” condition protection absence for too many years already. To augment this, we have no budget left for the fantastical elements that appear to exist in a very robust overhaul – that constituents pay for possibly twice or more. The Democratic Party is insisting on implementing whatever they have, with far too much respect for their law writers and themselves, in what appears to be under-serving the public with public funds. Their bundled laws are including the “pre-existing” condition protection as a way to achieve the goal of forcing it all through, un-edited and un-improved. That’s not going to work for us. Even with lawmakers concerned about their own fate with the Act, we too should be even more concerned. American conservatives have been speaking on behalf of Americans “without” a “voice” out of genuine concern. They’ve been stymied. And, despite the shutdown this year, I still find much reason to side with them. From that too, they may in my opinion rightfully wash their hands clean. Now we have to see what will come of the promises in healthcare in America, if it is allowed to proceed. [Update 2014: The “pre-existing” condition law has become law this January. Congratulations to many people. Now we must see what progress will come with all aspects of the laws. Hopefully, doubts about the healthcare overhaul will be laid to rest in light of success in the laws. And if so, there will be at least one grateful person, and I can speak for myself in saying that it would be me. As I have not read the laws, I cannot pre-determine. Besides that, the future will tell, and the current president will be remembered in history, as the actuator for what will be either remembered as a racket, or a service to the people.]

Some dysfunction in Washington DC?

I knew that this second term presidency would present problems. I had a hunch at some point.

hail to the filibuster!

Why would we need a complete overhaul to our United States’ health administering, when the only great concern to most people after all of these years who seek a health plan, has far less to do with the current delivery systems and far more to do with the one sticking point that our president promised us. Namely, a law which would prohibit health insurance companies from barring admittance of a patient, due to “pre-existing” condition. No huge 1,000 plus page overhaul is needed when one simple law can be put in place to prohibit insurance companies from blocking admission of patients through underwriting departments of the major US companies. Ah, but there seems to be more below the surface… underhanded and complex details that leave the mass public feeling mistrust. And, some of these details have come to light, giving weight to the skepticism. For all those who feared a doctor’s diagnosis that would give them a “pre-existing condition”, far worse, would be a system where patient is turned into serf, serving mostly to finance a bureaucracy.

corporations are, what did you say?

Does a corporation make a product for sale? Does a church make a product for sale?
Clearly there’s a distinction. Corporations manufacture products and/or services. In that sense they are one person, or many people, organizing together to sell product or service. Which is why the US courts should be able to recognize that churches are not corporations, unless its (a church’s) reason is to organize around selling. But, no, it does not do that. Is it to manufacture products or services? While churches organize, they neither create products nor services. But will the courts recognize this distinction? How about the courts? Are they corporations too since they are dispensing a service that is funded by a person or persons, paid for in dollars? No. Courts are neither. Lawyers are a paid-for service, and while courts require funding to operate, courts are a forum for discourse – not a product supplier!

UK + 1, UN + 1, US + 0.5

Why is it that anyone ought to know who ordered gassings in Syria?
Only then, would the United States’ government accusations hold credence.
Now that Assad has volunteered to allow the UN to have its way with his country,
it is a major breakthrough as he clearly sacrificed in the interest of avoiding WW3.
He’s a hero to his backers and to rebels who take up arms against him.
That is good, particularly since Assad is welcoming the collaboration, as we wait to see if
he can or will sustain military law. It has already been made clear, that his voluntary
concession will require a tall order of him and of the United Nations, as
war among rebels and government forces has been raging onward in the
country. It is the better way to sort through their issues without US military bombardment.
That would be totally unfair, particularly with what the UN now knows, that we do not.
The processes and evolutions in Syria will require great patience.
It is important that Russia remain critical of the US,
because disruptions in response to “failure” on the part of Assad, who is acting responsibly,
is evil.
Why raise the “bar” against Assad? It is to afford the luxury of pointing blame for his
country’s crisis. Are we going to do that in Egypt as well? With the intent of
keeping war a supposedly justified and measured response to “failure”, while
peace is at work, would be wrong.
So Russia is proving to be right, more and more that each day pass.
It seems we in the informed public, can be rest assured that the UN will be
able to work with Assad, no matter how long it take.
Otherwise, the same old scenario will continue… having read some of the details in brief,
if one reads between the lines, it sounds all too familiar…
Taking war “off the table” is exactly right. Insisting on being able to choose war at any
later date, (despite Assad capitulating in every regard) is evil. Good, is what is
happening now, thanks to negotiations; good, is US restraint.
Good would be giving Assad the option and protection needed for his exile or
imprisonment (whichever the UN decides, based on their findings).
If my country is defending and choosing to arm perpetrators of violence, killing the peaceful,
and dishonoring public (including Congressional) sentiment, I want
to know about it every time it happens. The US government can bide its time with power play,
but we citizens cannot.
The UN findings must be the first step in reaching cooperation among powers. Based even
on who is guilty (Assad or the rebels) – and my personal belief happens to be that
it is the rebels; Syria remains a complex battlefield.
For all the people trapped there, or those having fled, the problem is really big
and world leaders must recognize that those victims and refugees do not have the luxury of time
that you would like for yourselves.
They need some of the wealth of nations that are among the Arab League. I’m
disgusted that some in the middle-east live like kings, while others live worse than slaves.
How to get financials and resources to the right people
depends on leaders continuing to dialogue, with the right interests in mind.
[Update 2014: Unfortunately, one major middle-eastern power nation has refused to offer financial assistance to Syria. This cannot continue. I agree with my government’s apparent move to look for donors in that region, as was reported in this week’s news (1/21/2014).]

Geneva

The public news of the progress in the negotiations taking place in Switzerland is encouraging. Is it naive to be hopeful? We shall see. We shall also see [hopefully] who used the sarin gas.
